Joining hands to preserve Nha Trang Bay

Nha Trang Bay Management Board in cooperation with organizations has organized various propaganda activities on Nha Trang Bay biodiversity, contributing to raising residents and visitors’ environmental awareness to preserve Nha Trang Bay.

Various propaganda activities

Early this year, Nha Trang Bay Management Board held propaganda on Nha Trang Bay sea turtle and biodiversity protection on Bich Dam, Vinh Nguyen Ward, Nha Trang City. 

At propaganda session, Nha Trang Bay Management Board introduced about characteristics and the importance of sea turtles on the bay, rescue of sea turtles and impacts of plastic waste on marine creatures. Nha Trang Bay Management Board in cooperation with the Institute of Biology and Environment (Nha Trang University) provided training on classification of waste and compost production for 10 families on Bich Dam to reduce waste in the community, contributing to environmental protection on Nha Trang Bay. This is one of the propaganda activity jointly implemented by IUCN and Nha Trang Bay Management Board toward community-based environmental conservation and protection of sea turtles.

In addition, in 2022,  to protect the ecosystem of mangroves, Nha Trang Bay Management Board and Nha Trang Youth Union jointly cultivated 2ha of mangroves at Quan Truong River estuary. Nha Trang Bay Management Board jointly with Pacific Ocean University and Vietnam Green Community launched clean-up operation along Pham Van Dong Street, Nha Trang City in response to the 4th national clean-up campaign “For a green, clean and beautiful Vietnam”.

The activity was joined by more than 200 Youth Union members and young people from Vinh Hai Ward, Nha Trang University, the South Central Coast mobile police squad, Nha Trang City Urban Environment Joint Stock Company, Vinh Phuoc 1 Primary School teachers and students, volunteers and residents.

According to the leader of Nha Trang Bay Management Board, twice a month, the unit organizes diving to catch thorny starfish and remove garbage from the seabed of Hon Mun to protect coral reefs in Nha Trang Bay Marine Protected Area; and propagate biodiversity protection in marine protected areas. The unit also cooperates with the People's Committee of Vinh Hai Ward, Vinh Phuoc Ward and the vanguard in propaganda and patrols to ensure the marine environment and coral reefs managed in a sustainable manner in Hon Chong and Dang Tat sea waters.

Coordinated effort required

Dam Hai Van, Deputy Chief of Nha Trang Bay Management Board said that the coral reef ecosystem in some areas on Nha Trang Bay are showing good signs of recovery. On January 28, 2022, the Prime Minister issued the National Strategy For Biodiversity Until 2030 and Vision To 2050, stating that biodiversity is the natural resources for green economic growth; biodiversity conservation is the present, long-term, and sustainable solutions for environmental protection, natural disaster prevention, and climate change adaptation; biodiversity conservation is the right and responsibility of all organizations and individuals.

Nha Trang Bay Management Board instructed everyone, residents, tourists and business organizations to join effort in protecting biodiversity and landscape of Nha Trang Bay; preserve and restore coral reefs on the bay by avoiding  stepping on, damaging coral reefs; anchoring ships directly on the reefs; trading in products made from rare corals and species; fishing in the protected areas and ecological restoration subdivision of the marine reserve.
