Enhancing health care quality

Over years, in spite of difficulties and obstacles, Khanh Hoa health sector has effectively implemented medical tasks. Especially, the 2 newly-opened hospitals have contributed to enhancing health care quality in the province.

After many years of construction, the Provincial Oncology Hospital with 200 beds came into operation in February 2023. Up to now, the number of hospitalized patients has accounted for nearly 70% of the hospital beds. The hospital has successfully deployed a number of early-stage cancer treatment techniques, put the Linear accelerator into operation, etc. Patient Tran Thi Lang, Vinh Luong Commune, Nha Trang City said, “I have terminal lung cancer. The new hospital is spacious and clean, so we feel more comfortable and relieved."

In early July, Yersin Nha Trang General Hospital also came into operation with 200 beds. The hospital is now able for outpatient examination and treatment. After basically ensuring all facilities, the hospital will receive inpatients. Dr. Bui Xuan Minh, Director of the Department of Health said the provincial health sector has achieved important targets, including 10,5 doctors per 10,000 people, 36 beds per 10,000 people, the malnutrition rate in children under 5 with low birth weight of 7.4%, stunting rate of 8.5%; the rate of medically insured population of 92%, etc. In the first 6 months of 2023, medical examination has been given to more than 1.4 million people (a year-on-year increase of 26.9%) with inpatient treatment to more than 105,700 people (up by 24.2%); 14,850 surgeries (up by 19.7%).

The Provincial General Hospital has transferred several treatment techniques in surgery, ultrasonology, stent implantation, etc. to lower levels of care, thus improving medical care and saving many lives. The hospital has also received and successfully implemented techniques in endoscopic surgery,  treatment of congenital malformations, cardiovascular intervention, etc. from higher-level health facilities. The medical sector has effectively implemented national medical target programs, open vaccination and programs against HIV, tuberculosis, leprosy, mental illness...

In addition to the achievements, the provincial health sector is facing difficulties. According to Dr. Nguyen Duc Tinh, Deputy Director of the Provincial Center for Disease Control, although the epidemic diseases in humans in the province are under control, the recent complicated weather has affected the public health, posing the risk of outbreak, especially dengue and hand, foot and mouth diseases.

According to Dr. Bui Xuan Minh, in the last 6 months of the year, the sector will continue taking disease prevention and control measures; improving health care; and boosting digital application in treatment. The Department of Health will provide consultancy for the Provincial People's Committee to complete a draft project on turning the Provincial General Hospital to the largest hospital of the South Central Coast region; implement the national target program on socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas; the national target program on new rural areas in the period of 2021-2025, etc.
