Early flood detection with surveillance technology

Local authorities have installed 20 surveillance cameras in flood and landslide-prone areas in Khanh Hoa Province. The surveillance technology has proved effective in natural disaster response, contributing to promoting digital transformation in natural disaster prevention and control.

20 surveillance cameras installed in areas at risk of flooding and landslide capture, record and transmit data and clear video evidence to the Provincial Center for Natural Prevention and Mitigation, providing real-time alerts for proactive solutions to improve resilience and minimize exposure to natural hazards.

The National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control observed images transmitted by cameras at the Provincial Center for Natural Disaster Prevention and Mitigation in mid-August 2023.

According to the leader of the Office of the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Control, Rescue and Civil Defense, all the footages are transmitted directly to the Provincial Center for Natural Disaster Prevention and Mitigation; districts and communes where the cameras are installed; and functional forces to monitor and track water flow and collect data. This is in the project "Ensuring specialized facilities and tools at the Standing Office of the Provincial Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control", which has just been put into operation.

In recent years, the province has improved facilities and equipment for natural disaster prevention and control in the province. The occurrence of landslide, big waves or flooded bridges need to be promptly assessed and monitored to save lives.

The investment in surveillance technology for natural disaster control, research and rescue is essential. Apart from the cameras, the center has been installed with computers, screens, loudspeakers and drones to access dangerous areas. The project is nearly VND1.2 billion from the State budget.

The project is to provide early detection for catastrophic weather events and natural disasters, real-time alerts to save lives as well as promote digital transformation. In the coming time, more cameras are needed in critical sections at risk of flooding and landslide to further improve early detection and warning in case of natural disasters.
