Media and environmental sustainability

On October 20, Khanh Hoa Provincial Journalists’ Association organized the 10th Provincial Press Conference 2023 themed "The role of the press and communications in environmental protection associated with socio-economic development in Khanh Hoa Province until 2030, vision to 2045".

According to Doan Minh Long, Member of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Journalists’ Association, Chairman of the Provincial Journalists’ Association, environmental protection is an important and urgent task, especially when in the process of global integration. The press and communications are considered as effective tools to change environmental awareness, attitudes and behaviors to make a difference for sustainable development.

Environmental issues are given prominence in the media with many in-depth articles, creating widespread impacts on social life.  Nowadays, with advancement in technology, especially social media, environmental protection propaganda plays an increasingly important role as an indispensable link in joining efforts in the environmental preservation of all sectors, individuals and organizations.

Since the beginning of the year, the Party Committee and residents in Khanh Hoa Province have implemented the Politburo's Resolution No. 09 on the construction and development of Khanh Hoa Province till 2030 with a vision till 2045 and the National Assembly’s Resolution No. 55 on piloting some specific mechanisms and policies for the development of Khanh Hoa Province.

The 10th Press Conference 2023 themed "The role of the press and communications in environmental protection associated with socio-economic development in Khanh Hoa Province until 2030, vision to 2045" is committed to improving environmental management and protection, as well as environmental journalism and communications.

There were more than 60 presentations by scientists, journalists, press managers and those interested in the field of environmental protection. Delegates showed their concern over environmental issues and suggested effective and sustainable management and exploitation of natural resources, especially marine resources; adaptation to climate change; application of the environmental principles to policymaking to enhance environmental protection and promote sustainable socio-economic development, ensuring progress and social justice in the context of international integration.

Besides, the event also mentioned the role of the press in propagating environmental protection with solutions to environmental issues, including pollution in coastal,  urban, rural and industrial areas, etc.; promoting the professional ethics of journalists; social responsibility and the implementation of the 2016 Press Law, 10 articles regulating professional ethics and social media rules for Vietnamese journalists.

The conference also proposed a number of solutions to improve the effectiveness of environmental protection propaganda, especially scientific assessment of the impacts of climate change and sea level rise on important investment projects; articles about environmental protection, and communication strategies to contribute to raising environmental awareness and making a difference.
