Inspiring green living

Operating since the end of March 2024, the Green Clean-up Group has helped pick up trash on the beach, promote green living and call for environmental protection.

Trash pick-up on islands

Monk Thich Duc Tuc, Linh Quang Pagoda, Vinh Thai Commune Nha Trang City, head of the group said, “I often go to the island to do religious practice and find some littering there. I have asked the local authority and the pagoda head for permission to call Buddhists to join the clean-up efforts to keep this place clean and beautiful.”

Residents eagerly join volunteers in the clean-up.

The Green Clean-up Group came into being committed to calling volunteers to keep the environment on the island and other places in the province litter-free, clean and green. At first, the work focuses on the beach on Tri Nguyen Island. Every Saturday afternoon, about 10 volunteers head to the island to pick up trash. Around 10 islanders join the clean-up. They pick up all kinds of waste, including plastic bags, bottles, cans and foam pieces floating in the water to help clean up water pollution.

Ngo Kieu Tram, born in 1961, residing in Phuoc Hai Ward, Nha Trang City said, "We gather to kick-start a regular beach cleaning initiative on the island. Even though I'm old, I still want to partly contribute to making the island environment cleaner."

Joining efforts to preserve the environment

According to Dinh Thi Thu born in 1979, garbage often goes with the wind to the wharf area and Ngang Beach on the island. She has joined the coastal clean-up and hopes more and more people will work together to make the environment clean and beautiful. Dinh Van Ta born in 1963 said, "The wind blows trash to the island and into the water. Whenever I have time, I join the clean-up to help the living environment cleaner and more beautiful.”

The work has helped change the behavior to reduce littering. The group has initiated environmental action to protect the beauty of Tri Nguyen Island in particular and the Nha Trang City in general. While participating in picking up trash, Huynh Tan Phat born in 2004 has made a short clip to share on social media, calling for actions to save the environment to make the island cleaner.

In about 2 hours of work, the group collected more than 20 bags of trash. Participating in this activity regularly, Tran Minh Nhat born in 1978, residing in Vinh Hai Ward, Nha Trang City and his friends not only pick up trash on the island but also along Luong Son pass, Pham Van Dong Street, around Long Son and Suoi Do and Tu Ton pagodas, etc. to keep the places litter free.

According to Tran Quang Thinh, Vice-Chairman of Vinh Nguyen Ward People's Committee, the local authority on Tri Nguyen Island together with the Green Clean-up Group has mobilized residents on the island to participate in the clean-up to raise awareness of environmental protection.

Currently, the Green Clean-up Group maintains the clean-up activity once a week. The ward will contact schools on the island to mobilize students and residents to collect trash to raise environmental awareness and keep Tri Nguyen Island greener, cleaner and more beautiful, contributing to Nha Trang City’s green transformation.
