Retailers learn English language

Thanks to the English Club under the program “Khanh Hoa residents speak English”, many retailers at Dam Market, Nha Trang City have learned and improved their English language skills which help them communicate with foreign customers more easily and effectively and thus make their business more convenient.

Effective communication with international shoppers

John, a tourist from Canada, stopped at the souvenir shop of Dieu. She excitedly asked what he was looking for and showed him some items, Vietnamese girl figurines dressed in traditional ao dai, colorful cups, etc. as souvenirs for his girlfriend. She also told him about the prices, materials, etc. He decided to get a Vietnamese scenery cup. He said goodbye and smiled satisfactorily as he found the right thing he wished.

Having English language skills helps retailers communicate fluently and confidently with foreigners; ensure everything runs smoothly for clients and keep businesses efficient and connected.

“The English club for retailers opened at Dam Market in early 2023. At first, I hesitated to join the club as I did not think I could learn at my age. However, I used to have difficulties when communicating with foreigners. I used computers and calculators to translate or show them the prices. Tourism has revived and thus more and more visitors have come to Dam Market. The English language helps me to have better communication with foreign shoppers,” she said.

Inspiration

Every Friday afternoon, 42-year-old Dieu and other retailers at Dam Market put aside their business to attend the English Club class on the 3rd floor of the market. Through simple lessons with images, music, fun games and conversations, volunteers teach them basic conversations and carefully correct their mistakes in pronunciation. All students are excited to join to club activities, learn and improve their English skills in a fun and stressless way.

Although busy with their work, club members, including 60-year-olds, are enthusiastic about learning and they go to class regularly. Teacher Phuong and other volunteers are so supportive. Dieu's studiousness has inspired other people. She is such an inspiration by being an example of being committed to learning and not letting age be a barrier. Nguyen Thi Hien, a fashion trader said: "Dieu goes to class regularly and she is willing to help others in learning and attract many others to join the club. “This is such a motivation for me to come to the club every week and learn many useful things."

The English language helps them in business as well as in daily life. “I can help my child review her English lessons. My child and I can help each other to improve our English skills. We hope that the club will continue to provide us with more vocabulary about trade so that we can introduce our products to foreigners," Dieu added.

Joining Dam Market English Club for 5 months since its opening in March 2023, Dieu has become an excellent member of the club. The club has drawn the participation of 31 retailers.
