Green summer in Son Tan

Since early July, Nha Trang College of Technology students have implemented practical activities under the volunteer summer campaign 2024 in Son Tan Commune, Cam Lam District, Khanh Hoa Province to help disadvantaged communities.

6 solar-powered poles have just been installed thanks to the young volunteers, contributing to improving social security and traffic safety in Valy Village. Mau Thi Ry, a resident in Valy Village said, “We are all happy to have road lights that make travel safer and more secure for everyone, especially at night.”

Son Tan Commune has been chosen as the focus of the volunteer summer campaign 2024. At Son Tan Primary School, Nha Trang College of Technology students are helping repaint the playground. Participating in the volunteering campaign for the first time, Tran Khac Dat, a Faculty of Mechanical Engineering student, said they have some difficulties due to regular rain in the afternoon these days, affecting the work progress and they have to travel far to buy food for the whole team. However, they tried their best to fulfill the tasks.

According to Huynh Chi Tuyet, Secretary of the College Youth Union, its volunteers have carried out many projects to join hands in new rural construction, including installing solar road lighting systems and national flag lines; repairing and repainting the children's play area. In addition, the College Youth Union has also coordinated with businesses and sponsors to provide free medical check-ups and medicines for locals; gifts and free haircuts; organizing community games for children; screening propaganda films, etc. In spite of many difficulties, the volunteers are eager with the volunteering tasks.

Not only helping people, through summer volunteer activities, young people have also gained much valuable life experience. This is the second time Tran Van Chuong, a third-year student of the Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering has participated in summer volunteer activities. He said, "In Son Tan Commune, most people are ethnic minorities. During the time here, I’ve learned a lot of interesting knowledge about the local life and culture; and accumulated more experience in teamwork."

According to Le Ho Kiem, Son Tan Commune Party Secretary, the local population is mostly Raglai people whose lives are still hard, depending strongly on fields. The commune is gradually improving its facilities to meet new rural construction criteria. This year, the volunteering activities done by Nha Trang College of Technology mean a lot, contributing to supporting local socio-economic development and improving people's lives.
