Efforts to ensure traffic safety

On August 22, the Traffic Safety Committee of Khanh Hoa Province held a conference on traffic safety tasks in the first 6 months and the direction for the third quarter of 2024. Nguyen Tan Tuan, Deputy Secretary of Khanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee presided over the event.

According to Colonel Tran Van Giang, Chief of the Traffic Police Department, recently, the Traffic Police has drastically and synchronously strengthened traffic safety measures; and mobilized all resources to reduce traffic accidents to the lowest level. In particular, patrols to monitor traffic violations are considered as the leading measures against traffic accidents. Specifically, the Traffic Police has targeted handling drunk-driving, speeding and overloading offenses.

For the drunk-driving offenses alone, the provincial police have found specialized inspection groups targeted at drivers or motorcyclists under the influence of alcohol, focusing on inspection patrols at weekend to tighten enforcement to stop drunk-driving and improve road safety.

In addition, the Department of Transport has received many recommendations from the Traffic Police as well as related units in organizing traffic, especially handling traffic jams and congestion on the main roads of Nha Trang City.

The Department of Transport has coordinated with Nha Trang City People's Committee to review and develop a plan and report to the Provincial People's Committee about the use of vacant land as temporary parking lots to meet immediate needs.

According to Colonel Tran Van Giang, in the coming time, the traffic police will innovate patrols focusing on handling violations, including reckless driving, unsafe lane changes, wrong-way driving, etc. and develop a specialized plan to handle violations focusing on young drivers; maintain alcohol concentration cross-functional teams until the end of 2024.

“I think local authorities need to regularly coordinate to detect and propose solutions to resolve "black spots", high-risk locations and consider the responsibility of organizations and individuals. In addition, the province needs to strengthen the application of science and technology in ensuring traffic safety and thoroughly using technical equipment to detect violations. The Traffic Police Department has coordinated with the Provincial Police Department's Board of Directors to report and propose the Provincial People's Committee to equip a traffic violation monitoring system on the National Highway 1 and National Highway 27C in the province," Colonel Tran Van Giang said.

Concluding the conference, Khanh Hoa has set a goal to welcome 9 million visitors, including 3 million international arrivals in 2024. In 8 months alone, Khanh Hoa has received as many as 8 million tourist arrivals. With the tourism growth, many slow or unfinished traffic projects are posing huge challenges for traffic infrastructures.

To continue reducing traffic accidents in all 3 criteria based on the 2024 Traffic Safety Plan, the Department of Transport is requested to coordinate with the Provincial Police to continue to review and handle "black spots" or high-risk locations for traffic crash in the province; implement traffic safety measures at schools on national highways to ensure traffic safety for students. Heads of agencies and localities must take responsibility for the increase of traffic accidents in all 3 criteria, according to Nguyen Tan Tuan, Deputy Secretary of Khanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee.
