Enhancing English learning quality in the community

After nearly 2 years of implementation, the program “Khanh Hoa residents speak English” has gained satisfactory results, contributing to inspiring English learning among residents and creating a basis for English learning enhancement in the community in Khanh Hoa Province in the coming time.

Promising results

The “Khanh Hoa residents speak English” program hosted by the Provincial People's Committee and sponsored by Vingroup is due to last for 5 years. The program is designed to bring English language into daily use and thus promote the tourist destination of Khanh Hoa Province.

Officially launched in January 2023 with thorough preparation in terms of resources, the program has received support from provincial leaders, agencies and departments with the participation of the Provincial Youth Union, businesses, schools together with professional volunteers, club managers, etc.

In the 2nd phase, numerous activities have been organized to motivate English learning in all localities such as English speaking contests, “Sing to Shine” Singing Contests, Sampling English Community, Golden Bell Ringing, Story Telling, Podcasting, English Olympics, Master English - Master your life, 1 vs 100 Challenge, etc. The program has reached all locals and created an English-speaking environment in the community

According to Le Thu Nga, a lecturer of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, Nha Trang University, a professional program volunteer, the competitions provide opportunities for students to express themselves. This is an opportunity and challenge as well for them to build their confidence and gain more motivation to learn English.

According to statistics from the Management Board of the Program, in phase 2, 15/16 set targets have been achieved and exceeded. The program has expanded in 6/8 towns and districts, namely Nha Trang, Cam Lam, Dien Khanh, Van Ninh, Ninh Hoa and Cam Ranh.

The program has involved more than 200 professional volunteers in charge of nearly 10,000 members of 207 English clubs operating every week and 100,000 residents, including civil servants, salesmen, students, young people, soldiers, police officers, etc.

In addition, 11 school clubs have been established, including 298 class clubs with more than 13,000 high school students. The curriculum has been created with specialized English textbooks, 92 English lessons, a question bank with nearly 10,000 questions. On online channels, the program has also been widely promoted with more than 103,000 followers on its Fanpage; nearly 100 pieces of news, articles, and reports about the program's activities on the provincial mass media; and more than 5,300 people installing the EZ English app. Furthermore, there are a variety of learning channels with weekly online English classes on Zoom for everyone. Online clubs are planned to open soon to meet the needs of people in the province.

The success of the Khanh Hoa People Speaking English Program is not only reflected in the increasing participants but also in their English learning approach, their confidence and ability to communicate in the new language. The club assessment results were promising with 88% of members able to communicate at excellence to average levels.

According to Doan Dac Duc, a teacher of ILA English Center, a volunteer of the program, locals have become more aware of the importance of English language to achieve goals in life. Many have shown more interest in the language. In spite of the challenges, with the positive results achieved, the program has created a foundation for further development in the following stages.

According to Bui Thu Dung, Director of the “Khanh Hoa residents speak English” program, in phases 1 and 2, the program focused on expanding its coverage areas while the phase 3 will specialize in the effectiveness and quality of the program to improve communication skills, especially with specialized English to provide focused skills designed for learners in a professional, academic, work and social environments.
