Developing green and smart cities is an inevitable trend for the future. This is also an important goal defined in the Resolution 09 of the Politburo on the construction and development of Khanh Hoa Province to 2030, with a vision to 2045.

According to Tran Van Chau, Director of the Department of Construction, in recent years, the transformation and green growth in the infrastructures in the province have gone through many positive changes. The green infrastructure system has been focused with green constructions on the increase contributing to promoting the green space in the province. Along with that, the province has focused on investing build green parks in urban areas to increase the green density.

Towards green, smart cities

The Resolution 09 of the Politburo defines the target of the construction and development of Khanh Hoa Province to 2030, with a vision to 2045, towards green, smart cities. The Provincial Planning for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, emphasizes that the planning must be consistent with the national strategy on green growth and sustainable development.

According to the orientation, the urban space of the province aligns well with promoting the potential and strengths of each region with Nha Trang as the core urban area, Cam Ranh as a tourism-logistics urban area, Cam Lam as a modern, ecological, international-class airport urban area, Van Ninh as a high-class coastal tourism urban area, Ninh Hoa Town as an industrial urban area, Dien Khanh as an ecological, traditional cultural urban area; Khanh Son and Khanh Vinh as ecological sub-urban areas of mountains and forests.

According to Tran Van Chau, to build green, sustainable, smart, and modern urban areas, the province needs practical solutions to develop new green buildings and urban areas based on green building certification assessment standards. This includes initially complying with energy-saving standards, encouraging the use of clean energy, renewable energy, water saving, and wastewater treatment.

Pioneering in applying green building standards in the province is the building of the Provincial Party Committee, the National Assembly Delegation, the People's Council, and the Provincial People's Committee. According to Nguyen Thanh Hien, Director of the Provincial Development Project Management Board, the project is implemented in the direction of applying a green building certification system known as EDGE, which focuses on making buildings more resource-efficient with the following criteria: Water saving, energy saving contained in building materials, environmentally friendly technology and so on.

Along with building green cities, the province also needs to develop a smart urban system, focusing on urban infrastructures such as an automatic water supply monitoring and measurement system, a smart lighting control system, a source-based wastewater quality monitoring system, smart public lighting control centers and so on.

Regarding digital transformation in urban infrastructure management, the province also needs to digitize the entire provincial framework infrastructures on digital maps, share with relevant agencies for the planning management, construction and maintenance of technical infrastructures; prioritize the application of advanced digital technologies, contributing to reducing carbon emissions, saving energy and utilizing renewable resources.
