In the morning sunlight, flocks of pigeons are seen flying over the sea, around Tram Huong Tower and then swoop down to April 2 Square in Nha Trang City, chirping and picking up grain around the feet of locals and tourists.

The graceful image has become so popular as Nha Trang City started taking care of pigeons at the 2/4 Square this year. The initiative aims to create a friendly and welcoming image of the coastal city of Nha Trang. The first flag-raising ceremony at the square in 2025 ended with the "Dove of Peace over Nha Trang Sea" program, joined by provincial leaders, residents and tourists, giving grains to the pigeons.
Nguyen Thi Thanh Tam (Thai Thong Village, Vinh Thai Commune) said, “Doing morning exercise at the square, some friends and I enjoy feeding the birds. Hundreds of pigeons chirping and picking grain and flying around the square is a beautiful image of the friendly and hospitable Nha Trang. Many tourists are also excited about feeding the birds and taking fun photos”. “Feeding pigeons by hand can be a delightful and memorable experience for tourists,” said Do Thi Thanh Huyen, a tourist from Dong Nai Province.

According to Tran Minh Chien, Chairman of Nha Trang City People's Committee, pigeons have long been symbols of peace and harmony. The city has contracted Nguyen Van Thong to feed the pigeons twice daily with a supply of 2 - 3kg of rice/per day from the city. The initiative has been well-embraced by both locals and tourists.
The pigeons at the square are mainly raised by nearby residents. Regular feeding may increase their population, so the city must manage food sources to prevent diseases. A coordinating team will support bird care and the Public Service Management Board has contracted with Nha Trang Urban Environment Joint Stock Company to maintain the activity while keeping the square clean," said Tran Minh Chien.
Nguyen Van Thong added, “I have been feeding the birds at the square for about 4 years. The pigeons add vibrancy to the area, enhancing the appeal of this tourist city. I hope more people will join in taking care of and protecting these birds."
