Preserving coastal village environment

Residents and women's union members of Bich Dam Residential Group (Vinh Nguyen Ward, Nha Trang City) have taken part in several activities to keep the coastal village clean and against plastic waste, contributing to promoting a healthy living environment.

The Provincial Women's Union has recently organized community communication activities at Bich Dam Residential Group to reduce plastic waste and the use of disposable plastic products; promote waste classification at source; and encourage waste recycling and composting.

The Provincial Women's Union presents 3-compartment trash bins to Bich Dam residents.

At the program, Le Thi Bach Tuyet (Bich Dam Residential Group) showed how to make organic fertilizer at home. With real stories and images, the propaganda session helped local people be more aware of the harmful effects of plastic waste on the marine environment and join hands to protect the environment.

"The propaganda provides practical ways to classify garbage properly. I think such informative sessions are really helpful in raising public awareness of environmental protection," she said.

For proper waste recycling and treatment, Nguyen Thi Hong (Bich Dam Residential Group) has been collecting scrap for more than 10 years. She hires a boat every 2 to 4 months to transport 5 to 6 tons of scrap to the mainland in Nha Trang City. Collecting scrap is not only the livelihood of her family, but also helps clean up the coastal village and protect the environment from the harmful effects of plastic waste.

Local people of Bich Dam coastal village have joined hands to protect the environment, keep the coastal village green, clean and beautiful by putting daily household waste properly into dustbins. Every day, urban environmental sanitation workers come to collect and transport the garbage to the mainland for treatment. The Women's Union of Bich Dam Residential Group has promoted and mobilized people to limit the use of plastic bags, avoid littering, and practice composting at home.

Local people also regularly join clean-up in public places and remove trash from the sea. The Women's Union of Vinh Nguyen Ward has coordinated with Nha Trang Bay Management Board to give each household a shopping basket to limit the unnecessary use of plastic bags,”.

According to Tran Quang Thinh, Vice-Chairman of Vinh Nguyen Ward People's Committee, recently, the locality and mass organizations have organized many propaganda sessions, and seminars; utilized visual propaganda with banners against plastic waste in Bich Dam.

In addition, the Youth Union members, Women’s Union members and women have joined beach clean-up to collect plastic waste and mobilize residents to implement a community-based model for removing waste from the sea, stop the disposal of fishing gear directly into the sea to ensure the waste is collected and transported to the mainland for proper treatment.

Thanks to the tremendous joint efforts, the environment in the coastal village has significantly improved. Moving forward, the ward will continue to implement a plan for waste sorting, limit the use of disposable plastic products, and replace them with environmentally friendly alternatives to maintain a thriving, pristine and charming village.
