Youth actions for environment

Driven by a desire to raise public awareness of environmental protection, two students, Nguyen Ngoc Linh Dan and Bui Pham Anh Thu, grade 9/1 at Vo Van Ky Junior High School (Nha Trang City) have developed the project "Environmental solutions with mangrove planting along the Tac River, Phuoc Dong Commune, Nha Trang City". The project won the second prize at the Provincial Science and Technology Competition for high school students in the 2024-2025 school year.

Nguyen Ngoc Linh Dan said, “Mangroves act as a natural way to tackle climate change and protect the environment. We have learned about the current living conditions along the Tac River as well as the mangrove cultivation efforts by students. Therefore, we have proposed solutions to raise public awareness about environmental protection.”

Dan and Thu distribute leaflets about environmental protection to residents.

During the implementation of the project, the two students interviewed representatives of the Provincial Association for Nature and Environment Protection, talked with people living in the area along the Tac River, the Board of Directors and students; and distributed 150 survey forms to students.

Bui Pham Anh Thu said, "We realize that many people are not fully aware of the importance of mangrove ecosystems to our lives. Therefore, we have compiled clips and photos about the harmful effects of the loss of mangrove forests and the campaign to plant forests; designed and distributed propaganda leaflets about the benefits of planting trees for afforestation to contribute to environmental protection; provided tree planting and care instructions for other students; propagated anti-deforestation regulations, etc.”

In addition, Dan and Thu have jointly organized a mangrove planting program themed "For the green homeland", with the participation of more than 40 teachers, students and their parents. In the program, students were thoroughly explained by representatives of the Provincial Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment about the importance of mangrove forests to life, the benefits of tree planting and afforestation. They also learned about the mangrove ecosystem through photos and information accessed by scanning QR codes; participated in scientific activities and planted mangrove trees along the Tac River.

According to Teacher Pham Duc Huan, Vo Van Ky Junior High School, who guided the two students in their project, the propaganda activities of Dan and Thu on planting mangrove forests have helped raise environmental awareness and change the behaviors of residents and students, helping them understand that the responsibility to plant trees and protect forests to preserve their own living environment. Additionally, guidance on how to report suspected illegal tree felling was also given.

The students have become more aware of preserving the living environment,  limiting plastic waste and participating in some tree planting and environmental protection activities. Through their project, they have conveyed the meaningful message of joint efforts in maintaining a green, clean and beautiful environment.
