Promoting overseas Vietnamese’s role in developing Vietnamese product distribution channels abroad

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee jointly organized a conference in Nha Trang City on April 27 to summarize 5 years of implementing Project 1797 which focuses on mobilizing overseas Vietnamese to introduce and consume Vietnamese products and develop distribution channels for Vietnamese products abroad.

Present at the event were Le Thi Thu Hang, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs; Nguyen Tan Tuan, Deputy Secretary of Khanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee, Secretary of the Party Committee of Provincial People’s Committee; Tran Thu Mai, Member of Khanh Hoa Provincial Standing Party Committee, Chairperson of the Provincial Fatherland Front Committee, Standing Deputy Secretary of Provincial Party Agencies; and Le Huu Hoang, Member of Khanh Hoa Provincial Standing Party Committee, Standing Vice-Chairman of Khanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Provincial People’s Committee. The conference was also attended by representatives of central ministries and sectors and more than 200 overseas Vietnamese businessmen, representatives of domestic and foreign associations and business communities.

Speaking at the conference, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang highlighted that Project 1797 had been implemented comprehensively and effectively. It has driven production and export activities and helped promote the destination of Vietnam, showcasing its culture and identity globally.

That success is attributed to the leadership of the Party, the direction of the Government, the close coordination between ministries, sectors, localities and Vietnamese representative agencies abroad and especially the creativity of the overseas Vietnamese community, including overseas business associations and intellectuals.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, after 5 years of implementation, the project has taken good advantage of recourses from overseas Vietnamese to boost export, tourism and economic growth. Vietnam’s trade turnover increased from over USD517 billion in 2019 when the project was launched to USD786 billion by the end of 2024.

Vietnamese goods have become available in international markets, partly thanks to the important contribution of the overseas Vietnamese community. The achievements from Project 1797 are of great significance, contributing to maintaining economic growth and exports amid Vietnam’s efforts to achieve the GDP growth target of 8% by 2025, despite global fluctuations world following the Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaking at the conference, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Tan Tuan stated that, five years after the implementation of Project 1797, Khanh Hoa has achieved significant progress, contributing to the country’s overall development in this new era. Remittances have grown steadily, and many key products, including bird's nest, agarwood, seafood, coffee, textiles, and agricultural goods, have successfully entered the European Union (EU) and Japanese markets. These products are now available in numerous prestigious global distribution systems.

“We appreciate the support of the overseas Vietnamese community for their homeland in terms of financial support, investment connections, technology transfer, human resource training to the promotion of local destinations to international travelers. Their contributions vary from supporting the Khanh Hoa Fisheries Development Fund, giving gifts to Truong Sa Island District to organizing conferences and seminars to promote the destination of Khanh Hoa Province aboard,” added Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Tan Tuan.

Within the framework of the conference, the discussion session "Promoting overseas Vietnamese resources in promoting exports and developing Vietnamese product distribution channels abroad" took place with in-depth analysis from State management agencies, overseas Vietnamese businessmen and enterprises.

Delegates addressed challenges and obstacles in expanding the global reach of Vietnamese goods and proposed solutions to enhance the role of the overseas Vietnamese community in this effort.

The conference witnessed the signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding between Khanh Hoa Young Entrepreneurs Association and the Thai-Vietnamese Entrepreneurs Association of Thailand; the Vietnam-Japan Economic Cooperation Promotion Association and the Nha Trang-Khanh Hoa Tourism Association; and Khanh Hoa Sanest Soft Drink Joint Stock Company and Grace Shopping Mall Company (Thailand).

In her closing remarks, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang affirmed that the Party and Government considers overseas Vietnamese to be an inseparable part of the Vietnamese ethnic community and an important resource for strengthening international cooperation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to promote foreign affairs and advance diplomatic efforts and foster an open, supportive foreign policy for overseas Vietnamese to live, study, work, and actively contribute to their role abroad
