Architectural design for Phu Kieng Bridge selected

Khanh Hoa Province Architects’ Association has just announced the results of the architectural design competition for Phu Kieng Bridge in Vinh Ngoc Commune, Nha Trang City. Phu Kieng Bridge Construction Project is expected to start by the end of October 2025, facilitating travel in the area.

The design by the Traffic Construction Investment Consulting Joint Stock Company 1 (Dong Da District, Hanoi City) won the first prize. According to the leader of the Provincial Architects’ Association, the first prize-winning design of Phu Kieng Bridge seamlessly integrates with the surrounding landscape, elevating visual appeal. The project’s centerpiece is the tower pillar, inspired by the elegant form of agarwood trees and their budding blooms. At its peak, the tower takes the shape of a fully blossomed agarwood bud, while the cable system gently encircles it, evoking gracefulness and charm.

The spacious bridge surface is for both vehicles and pedestrians as well, featuring scenic lookouts for visitors to take in the surrounding views. Lush trees line both sides, offering shade and reinforcing the city's commitment to sustainability and urban greenery.

The Phu Kieng Bridge Construction Project invested by Nha Trang Construction Project Management Board with a total capital of nearly VND600 billion, 70% of which is from the provincial budget and 30% from the city budget is implemented in the period of 2024 - 2027. The project is to meet travel needs while enhancing infrastructure, fostering traffic connectivity and driving urban development.

The new reinforced concrete Phu Kieng Bridge, 280m long and 18m wide, is located at the current old wooden bridge with a 2m wide median. The approach road is 20m wide. The project has been appraised for investment policy, funding sources and capacity for capital balancing.

According to Nguyen Chi Danh, Director of Nha Trang Management Board of Construction Projects, currently, there are 2,000 households along Cai River bank, belonging to the villages of Xuan Ngoc, Hon Nghe 1 and Hon Nghe 2.

The exiting temporary wooden bridge set up by a local person in 2001 has become decrepit and thus it is not safe enough, especially in rainy seasons. Therefore, with the architectural plan, the management board will organize geological exploration, prepare a feasibility report, select a construction contractor, etc. If the procedures are favorable, the construction will start at the end of October 2025 to meet the travel needs and create a landscape for the city.

Khanh Hoa Provincial Architects' Association held an architectural design competition for Phu Kieng Bridge in late 2024. However, as an optimal solution had not yet been selected, the competition was held again for a second time in early March 2025. The prizes consist of 1 first prize worth VND150 million; 1 second prize worth VND100 million; 1 third prize worth VND50 million and 2 consolation prizes, each worth VND20 million.

In addition to the first prize, the organizing committee awarded the second prize to the Joint Venture of T27 Consulting Joint Stock Company and Green Vision Design and Construction Consulting Company Limited (26A Ly Tu Trong, Loc Tho Ward, Nha Trang City); the third prize to VTCO Investment Company Limited (Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City); 2 consolation prizes to the Joint Venture of C.D.A.C Construction Architecture Design Consulting Company Limited and 625 Construction Consulting Joint Stock Company (Ward 4, Tuy Hoa City, Phu Yen Province); and the Joint Venture of Southern Transport Design Consulting Joint Stock Company and Hoa Phong E&C Investment and Development Joint Stock Company (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City).
