Overpass at Ma Vong Intersection to be built

Two big projects, an overpass at Ma Vong intersection and a 4.3km tunnel along Tran Phu Street, Nha Trang City, have just been approved to be included in the list of key public investments by the Provincial People's Committee. This is a crucial initiative to solve traffic congestion and create additional space for developing Nha Trang urban tourism.

Overpass at Ma Vong intersection

In order to ease the traffic congestion at Ma Vong Intersection, Nha Trang City People's Committee has surveyed and proposed to the Provincial People's Committee an investment plan for the Ma Vong overpass. According to the proposal, the intersection will have a 2-way railway overpass to connect Thai Nguyen, Thong Nhat and Yersin while a new roundabout is also planned.  The total investment of the project is expected to be VND390 billion, including about VND211 billion for construction and VND118 billion for site clearance compensation.

According to the leader of the Department of Construction, based on the adjusted general planning of Nha Trang City until 2040 and after 2030, the existing Nha Trang Station will be relocated to Vinh Trung area; a high-speed railway station will be built in Dien Khanh; and the current railway will be removed and replaced with a pedestrian area featuring space for community activities.

According to the Department of Finance, the relocation plan for Nha Trang Station has yet to be fully aligned and synchronized with related projects, which may lead to an extension of the relocation timeline. Meanwhile, the Ma Vong intersection overpass is essential and consistent with the Project to adjust the general planning of Nha Trang City until 2040 approved by the Prime Minister, to promptly address traffic issues in the area.

4.3km Tran Phu Street Tunnel

According to the proposal of Nha Trang City People's Committee, the Tran Phu Street Tunnel project has a total investment of VND6,228 billion, implemented in two phases. Phase 1 involves the construction of a 940m closed tunnel from alley 86 Tran Phu to Nguyen Chanh Street, with 2 tunnel entrances at Tran Quang Khai Street and Le Thanh Ton Street; and a 230m open tunnel from alley 86 Tran Phu to Tran Quang Khai Street and a 230m open tunnel from Le Thanh Ton Street to Nguyen Chanh Street. The total construction length is about 1.4km. The total investment for this phase is VND1,843 billion, implemented from 2025 to 2040.

Phase 2 consists of the construction of a 2.9km tunnel from Hoang Dieu Street to Nguyen Binh Khiem Street, increasing the total length of the entire route to 4.3km; and adding 2 access branches at the intersection of Nguyen Chanh Street and Alley 86 Tran Phu. The total investment for this phase is VND4,385 billion implemented after 2040. The closed tunnel on Tran Phu Street is designed with an internal width of 17.5m, including 2 motor vehicle lanes, 2 mixed-use lanes and 2 maintenance ones.

According to the leader of Nha Trang City People's Committee, the Tran Phu Tunnel project aims to reduce congestion and enhance traffic flow, especially amid the city's rapid development and growing influx of tourists. The project also connects coastal urban spaces, promotes tourism and service development towards green and sustainable transportation, minimizes environmental impacts and improves life quality.

According to the leader of the Department of Finance, the Tran Phu tunnel project is necessary and consistent with the traffic orientation in related planning. The Provincial Party Committee Standing Committee has agreed in principle the investment and requested the Nha Trang City Party Committee to direct the City People's Committee to coordinate with the consulting unit, relevant departments and agencies to determine the appropriate route, and to investment phases to ensure efficiency. In particular, the Department of Finance has proposed that both phases should be implemented synchronously to prevent unnecessary costs associated with repeatedly opening and closing tunnel sections within the implementation period from 2026 to 2030.

On April 26, the Provincial People's Committee agreed in principle to add the 2 big projects of an overpass at Ma Vong intersection and a tunnel along Tran Phu Street, Nha Trang City, to the list of key public investments in Khanh Hoa Province. The Department of Finance was assigned to guide agencies based on the directions of the Provincial People's Committee and the conclusions of the Provincial Party Standing Committee to study and provide consultancy on supplementing Resolution No. 35 dated December 22, 2023 of the Provincial Party Committee on key projects for the period 2023 - 2025, with a vision to 2030.
