Scientific Workshop on VAST-FEB RAS Joint Marine Expeditions, Roadmap 2018-2025: Scientific achievements and future perspective

On May 28, in Nha Trang City, the Institute of Oceanography organized a scientific workshop on the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) and the Far East Institute, the Russian Academy of Sciences (FEB RAS) Joint Marine Expeditions, Roadmap 2018-2025: Scientific Achievements and Future Perspective.

Dinh Van Thieu, Vice-Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee speaks at the workshop.

The workshop was connected online with the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) and the Far East Institute, the Russian Academy of Sciences (FEB RAS). Professor, Academician Chau Van Minh, Member of the Party Central Committee, President of the VAST; Professor, Academician Yury Kulchin, Vice-President of the RAS and President of FEB attended the event virtually.

Present at the workshop at the Institute of Oceanography were Dinh Van Thieu, Vice-Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee; Associate Professor, PhD. Dao Viet Ha, Director of the Institute of Oceanography; and many scientists from Vietnam and Russia.

The workshop preliminarily assessed the results of the joint survey in 2025 with reports on marine biological sampling, biodiversity and ecological characteristics; summarized the cooperation between VAST and FEB RAS in the period of 2016 - 2025; presented outstanding results from the survey program using the Akademik Oparin ship.

Over 20 years of cooperation (2005 - 2025), the Academies of the two countries have conducted 10 joint surveys, including 9 focused on marine biodiversity and biochemistry using the Akademik Oparin ship. These efforts have significantly contributed to a deeper understanding of Vietnam's marine environmental resources, guiding management, conservation, and sustainable exploitation strategies.

The collection of marine life from the surveys of the Akademik Oparin ship is on display at the Institute of Oceanography.

The two countries have also cooperated in providing training for young scientists and jointly published numerous scientific works, serving as clear evidence of the success of their marine science cooperation. These achievements have provided a strong foundation for developing an effective coordination plan for the cooperation roadmap over the next decade.
