Supporting ethnic minorities to stay settled

In recent times, thanks to the State's support policies and the cooperation of organizations and communities, many houses have been built for poor households of ethnic minorities in Cam Lam District to help them stay settled and improve their living.

Cao Thi Minh is happy at her new house.

Happy with a new home

The family of Cao Thi Minh (Suoi Lau 3 Village, Suoi Cat Commune, Cam Lam District) is one of the poor ethnic minority households benefiting from the housing assistance provided by the Program to eliminate dilapidated houses in the province during the period of 2024-2025.

Through the housing program in the province, her family received a VND60 million grant to build a new house. In early May, the 50m2 house was completed and put into use. “I’m so grateful to the program and the local government for supporting my family to build a new house. With a stable home, we will work hard to improve our lives and bring up our children," said Cao Thi Minh.

Located not far from the house, Mang Dong's family (Suoi Lau 1 Village, Suoi Cat Commune) is also eagerly waiting for the completion of their new house as their current home is in poor condition and unsafe during the stormy season.

With VND70 million funded by Khanh Hoa News Agency staff together with a reciprocal capital of VND50 million from the family,  the house, 48m2, including a living room, 2 bedrooms, kitchen, 1 toilet, is about to be completed and put into use. This is 1 of 2 houses that Khanh Hoa News Agency supported the construction on this occasion for those in housing need in Suoi Cat Commune.

According to Nguyen Thi Yen, Vice-Chairperson of Suoi Cat Commune People's Committee, the commune has 3 ethnic minority villages with 591 households and 2,468 people. In recent times, thanks to resources from programs and policies for ethnic minority areas, local people's lives have improved. In particular, the locality has mobilized all resources to support the construction of 85 houses for ethnic minority households. In particular, implementing the Program to eliminate dilapidated houses in the province, 26 households, including 25 ethnic minority households in the commune, have benefitted from the housing grants, VND60 million each.

In Son Tan Commune, there are 2 villages with 324 households and 1,249 people, of whom ethnic minorities account for 95%. In 2024, thanks to the capital from the Socio-Economic Development Program for ethnic minorities and mountainous areas, together with the support of businesses and localities, 17 new houses were built for poor ethnic minorities; and 1 house was repaired for revolutionaries. Implementing the Program to eliminate dilapidated houses in the province in the period of 2024 - 2025, the commune was supported to build 20 new houses for ethnic minorities.

Efforts from the entire political system

Cam Lam District consists of 14 administrative units, including 13 communes and 1 town. Communes where ethnic minorities live include Cam Tan, Cam Phuoc Tay, Suoi Cat, Son Tan and Cam Hoa. In recent times, the Party and the State, as well as local authorities, have implemented many policies and activities to care for and support ethnic minority communities.

Implementing the Program to eliminate dilapidated houses in the province in the period of 2024 - 2025, Cam Lam District has 91 cases eligible for housing assistance (more than 50% of ethnic minority people); of which 30 houses were repaired, with a grant of VND30 million/house and 61 new houses with a grant of VND60 million/house.

To effectively implement the program to eliminate dilapidated houses, the Steering Committee for Eliminating Dilapidated Houses in Cam Lam District has directed the promotion of awareness and responsibility of authorities and socio-political organizations. In addition, more than VND4.5 billion in funding by the Provincial "For the Poor" Fund, communes and towns also have had creative ways to mobilize contributions of workdays and encourage organizations and individuals to contribute over VND177 million, ensuring that the new houses are more spacious and of a higher quality standard.

With the participation of the entire political system, 91 newly built and repaired houses, of which 46 were for ethnic minorities in the district were completed as planned. In addition, some communes with ethnic minorities have also mobilized businesses to support home construction for disadvantaged households that are not eligible for the housing assistance program. These efforts have helped reduce poverty and ensure households stay settled in their own homes.
