In spite of old age, 69-year-old Huynh Luu or Nguyen Niem as a religious name (19, Le Thanh Ton, Nha Trang), always does charity work to help the needy. This year’s university entrance exam season, the man has offered free accommodation to 490 candidates in Nha Trang City.
Although his family is just average and her wife is suffering from heart attack, he has made great effort to overcome difficulties to do charity work to help the poor. Huynh Luu has appealed to Buddhists of many pagodas including Long Son, Ky Vien, Hai An, Kim Quang, etc. and their families to offer free shelter to 490 university candidates this year's exam season.
Luu and the Buddhists of Hoang Phap (Ho Chi Minh City) have given 2,300 portions of vegetarian rice and 3,000 cartons of milk free of charge. Hearing that a candidate’s mother named Le Viet Hoa (32/B4 Han Thuyen, Nha Trang City) was robbed of 3 million VND during her trip from Quy Nhon (Binh Dinh) to Nha Trang City for an university entrance exam, he contacted her and offered them free accommodation during her son's exam days in Nha Trang City.
His house is divided into seven rooms for rental with cheap prices. Thanks to the donations of Buddhists and many other beneficiaries, he has had a relief fund. Besides, he is also a bridge for poor patients to access to free eye surgery in hospitals. “The man is very helpful and devoted to charity work.” Since 2006, he has introduced as many as 600 poor patients in Khanh Hoa and neighboring provinces to have free eye surgery,” said Le, his neighbor.
The man said, “Many are poorer than me. The work has filled my life with love, companionship and meaning. I’m glad to find that our help can partly reduce the poor’s worry. That is also the humanity taught by the Buddha.”
