Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has just approved a road development project in the period of 2020-2030 to improve the good and passenger transportation quality with suitable cost in order to better serve the national socio-economic development.
5.5 billion Passengers and 760 million tons of goods are expected to be transported and 2.8-3 million automobiles are supposed to run in the system by 2020. Means of public transport, especially buses, will be developed in urban centers, particularly Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to minimize the use of private vehicles, reduce traffic jams, and ensure traffic safety.
By 2020, a system of 24 expressways, 2,381 km in total length, will be constructed and the local transport network will be upgraded to meet the requirements of rural industrialization and modernization and connected with the national road system. Local means of transport will be developed to facilitate traffic with suitable transport cost. The road traffic infrastructure will have been fundamentally modernized by 2030 with new highways, urban roads and belt roads.
