Bo Bo Thi Cuong, a Raglai woman in Hon Dung Village, Son Hiep Commune, Khanh Son District was born into a poor family. Because of financial problems, she had to stop her schooling to work when graduated from high school. She got married in 1999 and her family lived in poverty. She gave a birth to a daughter in 2000 and had to stay at home to take care of the baby. Her husband became the only earning member of the family and her family met greater financial difficulties.
Cuong and many other women were then offered loans and financial services by the local authorities and the women’s association. She attended courses on farming technique as well as child care and education. In addition, the women’s association guaranteed VND5 million of loan offered by the Bank for Social Policies in 2004.
With the knowledge and loans provided, she invested in husbandry and cultivation. Her family has had 6 perches of wheat, 3 perches of wet rice earning 3-4 tons of rice a year so far. Her family really escaped from poverty in 2009. Apart from two fish ponds, her family earns about VND35-40 million a year from wheat, rice and fruit crops. Her family is now living in comfort. She can afford her children’s education. She also has finances to take care of her parents.
Moreover, she works as an assistant tutor at an elementary school in Son Trung Commune. Besides, Cuong frequently joins activities held by the local authorities and women’s association. Her family has won the title Cultural Family at commune level for 5 years. Cuong was voted an excellent member of the women’s association.
