According to the Ministry of Education & Training, swimming will be taught in primary schools nationwide from 2010 to 2015.
Phung Khac Binh, Head of Ministry of Education’s Students Affairs Department said the guidance documents on teaching swimming in primary schools have been sent to departments of education & training in 63 communities.
Drowning is the leading cause of death, accounting for 50% in Vietnam because of severe flooding in central region and Mekong Delta. Statistics in 2005 – 2007 showed that 22.000 deaths were reported among 556,891 water-related injuries. Swimming lessons are in pursuit of its mission to eliminate drowning and water-related injury.
Fourth graders will be taught how to swim in 2010-2011 academic year. Swimming will be taught at weekend, during summer vacation or in physical educations classes if possible. Swimming pools will be constructed in schools to facilitate swimming classes.
Basic swimming skills will be provided to children to help them survive if they ever get caught in a water emergency. Acquisition of basic swimming ability is a fundamental requirement in any meaningful attempt to eliminate drowning.
