Many street children to benefit from support project for street children, 2nd phrase

The support project for street children, the first phrase, has finished, helping meet the basic needs of many needy children and bring them back home....

The project is working for a better world for children in an effort to re-establish street children’s rights to education and healthcare.

The support project for street children, the first phrase, has finished, helping meet the basic needs of many needy children and bring them back home. Many of them and their families are expected to continue to benefit from the second phrase of the project.

Funded by the European Commission, the support project was implemented in 5 communities, including Vinh Phuoc, Ngoc Hiep, Phuong Son, Vinh Nguyen and Phuoc Dong in Nha Trang City from 2004 to 2007. After the 4 years, the number of street children dropped to under 100 from 700. The second phrase of the project began in 2009 in 4 communities, including Vinh Phuoc, Vinh Hai, Phuoc Dong (Nha Trang) and Dien Xuan (Dien Khanh District).

Many street children have been offered  psychological or financial help. In 2009, 150 street children returned to their families and vulnerable children had access to quality basic education and medical care. 28 children were provided vocational training. 30 poor families were granted capital and had access to agricultural knowledge. Besides, many entertainment activities were held for the disadvantaged children.

In 2010, estimated 520 street children will receive psychological support and return home and . 253 children will have access to basic education and health care and 75 children to vocational training. Poor families will be provided capital and agricultural knowledge to develop their business, etc. The Khanh Hoa organizing board will work closely with the local people’s committees and mass media to raise public awareness of the social issues.

The project is working for a better world for children in an effort to re-establish street children’s rights to education and healthcare as well as to protect those children who risk losing their rights. Hopefully, the project will help reduce the population of street children in Khanh Hoa Province, so that all disadvantaged children will have opportunities to develop to reach their full potential.
