Preventing epidemic diseases, including diarrhea, H1N1 and H5N1 flu, petechial fever, hand, foot and mouth disease is the focus of public health intervention from now to the end of 2010 under the direction of Khanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee.

Over the past 8 months, thanks to great effort in epidemic control, cases of infectious diseases have decreased compared with last year. No cases of neisseria meningitidis and viral meningitis have been reported so far while 4 cases of neisseria meningitidis and 5 cases of viral meningitis were found in 2009. There have been 43 cases of hepatitis B, a 23% decrease compared with 2009, 7,500 cases of diarrhea, a year-on-year decrease of 37%.


The focus of public health intervention is to prevent rather than treat a diseases.

However, cases of typhoid fever and petechial fever have increased with 3 reported cases and 2,997 cases respectively, mostly in the districts of Dien Khanh, Ninh Hoa and Cam Lam. Combined effort has been made to eradicate fever viruses, aedes aegypti and increase public awareness of the disease.

In addition, Public Health Agency has also focused on rehabilitation, which is the process of assisting someone to improve and recover lost function after an event, illness or injury that has caused functional limitations. In the first 6 months, medical treatment was given to 1.9 million arrivals and over 77,000 inpatients with 7,931 surgery cases. 2,540 disabled peole have had access to rehabilitation helping 600 to integrate into the community. Employment opportunities have been offered to 400 disabled peole 165 disabled children have had access to schooling.

The national open immunization program has been effectively run with a 1.8% increase in the immunization coverage for children under 1 year. The rate of child malnutrition has dropped significantly by 18.8%.The supervision on food safety has been closely monitored and enhanced. 64 food safety certificates have been granted to food businesses. 1,521 out of 8,741 food businesses were fined for violating food safety law. 7,000 people were provided knowledge about food safety.

Moreover, many methods will be taken to inspect standby medicine and medical equipment supply against epidemic in the coming rainy season, speed up constructions of hospital and health care centers, etc.
