13-month Tran Thi Anh Thu, a daughter of in Dien Toan Commune, Dien Khanh District, Khanh Hoa Province becomes healthy after a heart surgery conducted 1 month ago. Her father named Tran Ngoc Tri happily said, “We are poor and cannot afford the cost of a heat surgery for my baby. VND80 million is a fortune for us. Luckily, the congenital heart surgery program has funded 70% of the cost for the heart surgery conducted at Tam Duc Heart Hospital in Ho Ho Minh City. My baby has a chance for survival. We are very grateful to program which has saved my daughter’s life.”

A girl named Mang Thi Hong Dao born in 1993 in Suoi Lau 1, Suoi Cat Commune, Cam Lam also benefited from the program. With congenital heart defect, she used to suffer from shortness of breath, cyanosis, syncope and poor feeding. Now she is very happy that she can continue her schooling to fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher.

9-year-old Pham Thi Nhu Y on 2-4 Street, Nha Trang City said, “I was born with congenital heart defect, but my family couldn’t afford a heart surgery. Thanks to the congenital heart surgery performed in October 2008, I am fine now. I am grateful to the sponsors.”

The congenital heart surgery program run from 2007 to August 2010 under the resolution of Khanh Hoa Provincial People’s Council and Decision No. 22/2007 of the Khanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee on providing medical assistance for poor children with congenital heart defect in the period 2007 - 2010.

The mentioned children are among 300 cases benefiting from the congenital heart surgery program in Khanh Hoa Province. The charity program has been funded by VinaCapital and Ho Chi Minh City’s Sponsoring Association for Poor Patients. Don Lam, President of VinaCapital Fund said, “VinaCapital will continue to work with local authorities to provide financial assistance for the program until 2012. I hope that no child will die of congenital heart defect.”

Recent statistics released by the Department of Labor, Invalids & Social Affairs shows that 87 out of 270 children with congenital heart defect are born in poor families. Without financial support, their families cannot afford the heart surgery. More donation is needed to help the children to have access to appropriate medical and life-saving operation.
