Staying involved socially makes the elderly more active.

The elderly play an important role not only in families but also in communities. Many have taken part in socio-economic activities helping build up national unity and strengthen the political and spiritual unanimity among the local people.

The elderly’s long lifetime has seen valuable accumulation of knowledge, living experience and wisdom. Many have got involved in many social activities and gained satisfactory results. 67-year-old Trinh Dau in Phu Cang 1, Van Phu Commune, Van Ninh District is among good examples for doing business and taking part in social work. He is presently the chief of the local division of the Vietnam Fatherland Front and President of Red Cross Association of Van Phu Commune. He said, “Staying involved socially with others has made me more active.”

Statistics released by the Khanh Hoa Provincial Association for the Elderly shows that over 95,200 members are joining social activities. Among them, 4,000 members are getting involved in governmental-related work. Over 2,350 are working for the Vietnam Fatherland Front of wards, communes and villages. 540 are family conciliators. With wealth of valuable living experience, they have contributed greatly to the local development. The elderly are good examples for younger generations to follow.

Pham Sam, Deputy chairman of Nha Trang City Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front said, “The elderly are highly respected. They are wiling to take part in such social activities as family conciliation, charity work, study encouragement, propaganda against crime, etc. " Old people have also set up clubs named “Model grandparents and dutiful children”. They have actively participated in the campaign “Old age, good example” in all sectors including business, education and social security contributing to the strengthening of the local government and a healthy living environment.

The great effort and experience of the elderly are valuable helping to fight against social evils and build civilized communities.
