According to Dr. Bui Xuan Minh, there is sufficient supply of flood disease medicines. As the waters recede - diseases including cholera, malaria, red eye, skin disease, etc may flourish. There is an increased risk of infection of water-borne diseases contracted through direct contact with contaminated waters. Floodwater may contain dangerous bacteria like cholera from mixing with raw human sewage.
Since November 5, the Preventive Health Center in cooperation with Pasteur Nha Trang institute has supervised the aftermath of the flooding. Besides, the Ministry of Health has provided the Department of Health 100 life-jackets and devices to deal with emergency cases. Medical teams have paid visits to affected communities. Local residents are asked to take precaution against flood diseases. People are advised to avoid direct contact with the floodwater as a precautionary measure, drink boiled water and eat safe food.
They are also instructed to use preventive medicines (especially cloramin B) to disinfect the affected areas, clean up and dry out the building quickly with detergent and water after flooding to prevent mold growth. Parents are also being told not to allow their children to play in flood-water areas and wash children’s hands with soap frequently before meals.
