The 2011 National Action Month  on Food Safety with the theme “food production, business and consumption under Food Safety Law" takes place from April 15 to May 15.

Dr. Bui Xuan Minh, Vice Director of the Department of Health says food guality affects directly human’s health. In certain circumstances, the food we eat to maintain life may actually threaten  the health as well as social, commercial and economic development.

Thanks to the concern of Khanh Hoa Provincial Party Committee and People’s Committee together with the great effort of Khanh Hoa Provincial Department of Health in cooperation wit other relevant agencies and People’s Committees at all levels, the food quality, hygiene and safety management has gained some achievements. Education, propaganda and supervision related to the issue have been promoted helping food industry to be strictly controlled by law.

Particularly, the Law No. 55/2010/QH12 on food safety, a substitute for the food safety ordinance which is no longer suitable for the present situation, was issued on June 17, 2010. This law defines organizations and individuals’ rights and obligations related food safety: conditions for assuring safety of food production, trading, import and export; food advertisement and labeling; food testing; food safety information, education and communication, etc.

Dr Minh has said the 2011 Food Safety Education Month this year has mobilized all organizations and individuals and authorities at all levels to join in the dissemination of Food Safety Law and legal documents on food safety of the Government, the Ministry of Health, departments and ministries and people’s committees al all levels. In addition, inspection over food production, processing and business have been enhanced to prevent food poisoning and common food-related diseases .

The action month for food safety includes many activities such as meetings, seminars and talk shows about food safety together with regular inspections over foodservice industry. Dr. Le Dinh Don, Chief of the Department of Khanh Hoa Food Safety has said inspections over food production, processing and marketing establishments had been carried out.

On 1-15 April, the department in cooperation with local communities held training courses on food safety for over 1,000 teachers, kitchen administrative staff and nursemaids of schools in Khanh Hoa Province. The course included food safety law and regulations on infectious disease prevention in national educational units.

With the initiatives, the Action Month for Food Safety is expected to gain satisfactory results, helping to increase public awareness of food safety. Dr Bui Xuan Minh’s advise is to be a wise consumer to choosing safe and healthy food and avoid unsafe one that does not meet safety requirements to protect the health of ourselves and our families.
