Under Street Children Supporting Project by the European Committee, street children in Vinh Phuoc Ward have returned school or been trained vocation.

Dumping ground at Ru Ri Mountain Pass, 10 kilometers apart from Nha Trang, is a place to earning living of many poor people with street children. As a result, Vinh Phuoc Ward previously gathered a large number of children who earned living by collecting used nylon bags and scraps at the dumping ground. Some of the children were homeless and the others from poor families quitted study and toiled away for living.

However, now, street children in Vinh Phuoc Ward haven’t been seen any more. Some of them have returned school and the others have been trained vocation for better jobs. This bright thing comes to the  children when Street Children Supporting Project by the European Committee has been developed in Vinh Phuoc Ward since 2004.

The project has helped hundreds of street and poor children to go to school and study vocation. Additionally, families with street children have been given loans to change into new jobs, trained knowledge about home economics, business, thrift and food hygiene. Accordingly, life of many poor families in the ward has been improved and the number of street children here has been decreased sharply.

Street children trained new vocation to earn living

In the second phase (2009 – 2011), the project continue supporting the ward. In 2009, 179 street children were given support on education, medicine, vocation, Tet presents and facilitated to join cultural and sports activities. The figure in 2010 was 219.

Up to now, under the project, many children have grown up and worked to earn living for themselves and assist their families. For example, Nguyen Dinh Quang, born in 1995, has become a motorbike repairer; Nguyen Van Hieu, born in 1996, has become a skillful painter and Nguyen Tuyet Mai, born in 1994, is a tailor with a stable income now.

In 2011, 195 needy children in the ward will be supported by the project. Now, the dumping ground at Ru Ri Mountain Pass sees no children collecting garbage.
