Held by Khanh Hoa Provincial Children’s House during Sea Festival 2011, an environmentally-themed community-connection drawing and sand sculpture contests helped to promote the image of Khanh Hoa, beautiful and friendly. It was also an opportunity for children to express their dreams for a greener world.

A child named Vo Duc Minh Nhat said, “We are creating the artwork of a tortoise. It is a marine creature and our nation’s mascot.” The group Nguyen Thi Tu Oanh, Pham Minh Tien and Huynh Nhu An Tue shaped an octopus while the group of Le Nhu Truong formed Spratly Islands.

More than 200 individual paintings were submitted and 40 individual awards were rewarded. A community-connection painting by 20 children on 1.5m -10m cloth featured a lively image of a peaceful land and islands where children were playing with sea waves and joining clean-up effort at the beach with many marine creatures in the water and birds in the sky.

All the children’s paintings focused on concrete actions to preserve biodiversity and environment such as tree planting, marine and animal conservation, pollution reduction, etc.

The drawing and sand sculpture contests provided a great opportunity for children to express their views and thoughts about their surroundings reflecting their dreams for a green world with sustainable development.

The contests were also a playground for children to expand their imagination helping them to relieve stress after school and enhance their socialization. Le Thi Ngoc Thanh, a tourist from Ho Chi Minh City, said “This is the first time I have visited Nha Trang on the occasion of the sea festival. I find the event so impressive. The drawing and sand sculpture contests were so meaningful. They help to nurture children’s spirits. I hope the contests will be held in other cities.”
