The trade union housing fund helps low and moderate income people to improve their lives.

Living on a low income, Truong Phu Hung in Phuoc Dong Commune, Nha Trang City cannot dream of a new house to replace his dilapidated hut. Thanks to the support of Khanh Hoa Trade Union, his wish has come true.

Truong Phu Hung, a worker for Hon Thi Joint Stock Company and his wife, an employee at Plastic Manufacturing Company have a monthly income of VND3.5 million. His family has to tighten belts to cover all daily expenses, including tuitions for their two daughters. Hon Thi Joint Stock Company has suggested Khanh Hoa Trade Union support their difficult situation.

A 75m2 house worth VND80 million has been constructed for his family thanks to a VND20 million aid from the trade union housing fund and the provision of building materials from the company. “It was my long-time dream and I can’t believe it has come true,” he said.

Another beneficiary is Nguyen Tu Cuong, a security guard at Vinh Truong Fish Port, living at 18/2 Vo Thi Sau, Phuoc Long, Nha Trang City. He has also received a new house thanks to the provincial trade union housing fund. “I cannot afford to build a house without the help from the trade unions,” he told us.

Hung and Cuong are among 126 poor workers having benefited from the provincial trade union housing fund launched by the Vietnam Federation of Trade Unions in 2007. The housing fund is designed to meet the affordable housing needs of low and moderate income individuals.

Over 4 years, Khanh Hoa Trade Federation has raised VND2.3 billion for the repair and construction of houses for the poor. 103 houses were constructed and 13 houses were repaired with the support ranging from VND10 million to VND20 million/ house.

The houses offered to the poor are invaluable gifts representing labourers’ solidarity and mutual support. They have helped low and moderate income people to improve their lives.
