Residents in Ninh Ich Commune, Ninh Hoa District, join mangrove restoration effort.

Mangrove plantations support unique ecosystems, hosting several important species of fish and crustaceans. Despite restoration efforts, much of mangrove forests has been destroyed.

According to the data released by the Department of Natural Resources & Environment, only 104ha of mangrove forests remains on Van Phong Bay (17.7 ha), Nha Phu Swamp (37.33ha), Vinh Truong Estuary, Nha Trang City (15.64ha) and Thuy Trieu Swamp (14.3ha) with 34 common mangrove species, including white mangrove, rhizophora apiculata, sonneratia, etc.

One of the main reasons for the disappearance of mangrove forests is destructive fishing and improper aquaculture practices.

Therefore, action has been taken in a variety of areas to increase environmental awareness and education.

In recent years, much community effort has been made to protect mangrove plantations as more and more local residents have realized the value of mangrove forests, especially in sustainable and effective aquaculture.

Many villagers in Tan Dao (Ninh Ich, Ninh Hoa District) and Tuan Le (Van Ninh District) have replanted mangroves.

However, due to lack of funding and adequate support policies, the results have not been very satisfactory.

Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee has directed relevant authorities to take initiatives to restore mangrove forests, especially in Tuan Le (van Ninh), Tan Dao (Ninh Hoa) and My Ca (Cam Ranh), Thuy Trieu Swarm (Cam Lam), Dam Bay (Nha Trang). Mangrove forest reserves may be established.

More effort is required to raise pubic awareness of mangrove forest protection and encouragement of all the community's participation in environmental matters.
