At the age 85, Le Dinh Xuan, Tan Hai Village, Cam Hai Tay Commune, Cam Lam District, Le Dinh Xuan, Chairman of Association for the Elderly of Cam Hai Tay Commune is still working hard with an average income of over VND300 million a year. Money has been made on a barren land.
Le Dinh Xuan says his 5ha land used to be left fallow due to salt-affected soils which retard plant growth, and cause irrigation difficulties. However, he decided to buy the land and apply the garden-pond-pigsty economic model abbreviated in Vietnamese as VAC. The model combines orchard development, fish breeding in ponds and animal husbandry.
"We went to the western southern region to learn techniques for managing saline soils. Day by day, year by year, the barren land has become a lush garden with over 1,000 Cat Hoa Loc mango trees and hundreds of Australian mango trees," he said
In addition, he breeds duck and fresh water fish. His successful VAC model brings his family an annual income of VND300 million. He has transmitted his production experience to his neighbors.
Besides, he has provided mango leaves which are said to have medicinal uses for Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Medicinal Materials. He has had orders with farmers in Cam Ranh City and Cam Lam District to purchase mango leaves after fruit harvest, helping to create jobs for thousands of local residents.
As the chairman of the Association for the Elderly, he has contributed greatly to the development of the association. He is also a friendly person. He often advises young people to lead a healthy and helpful life.
"I am happy to enjoy the fruit of my labor now. In spite of old age and poor health, I still try my best to set a good example for younger generations to follow," he said.
Le Dinh Xuan has been commended and rewarded by the Vietnam National Association for the Elderly, Farmers' Association and local authorities.
