Located in Thuy Trieu Village, Cam Hai Dong Commune, Cam Lam District, Thanh Son Pagoda is well-know as a home for unfortunate children. The story of Superior Monk Thanh Quang who has taken care of hundreds of orphans and foundlings is considered as a legend in a real life.
A kind-hearted father
When we came to the pagoda, Superior Monk Thanh Quang had came back from a trip to the southwestern region. Surrounded by many children, he embraced a baby named Che Truong Xuan, who had been abandoned at only one day old.
The pagoda has become the home for the education of exposed and deserted young children. It provides care and develops resilience in vulnerable children, enabling them to have access to education and achieve their full potential.
Educating the unfortunate
Since 1998, the pagoda has brought up 130 orphans. 4 children have grown up and have got jobs. 107 orphans and 25 homeless old people are in the care of the pagoda now.
Great effort with patience is required to educate the vulnerable children. They are sent to school. Besides, they can join classes of math, foreign language, computer science, music, etc at the pagoda.
The pagoda always cooperate closely with their school teachers to know better about the children's progress as well as prevent them from dropping out of school.
In 2011-2012 school year, 8 children were at vocational high school and university, 15 at senior high school, 25 at junior high school and 20 at primary school. All the children were eligible to enter upper classes. 8 children were graded very good and 25 graded good.
Besides, with a commitment to charity, every year, the pagoda donates gifts to poor people. "I want the children to understand the value of benevolent giving and caring," says Superior Monk Thanh Quang.
"Thanh Son Pagoda has contributed greatly to the promotion and maintenance of the local cultural life and social security," says Truong Tri, Chairman of Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Cam Hai Dong Commune.
What the Superior Monk Thanh Quang has done is so meaningful and helpful, helping unfortunate children to grow up to be good people and confidently make their way in the world.
