Khanh Hoa Provincial Department of Population & Family Planning has just developed the program "Community-based care for the elderly". Phuoc Long and Phuoc Hai are the two wards chosen to pilot the program.

By 2050, the United Nations estimates that the elderly population of the world will reach about 20%. The aging population in Vietnam will be 26%. Vietnam’s population is ageing.

The data 2009 showed that the number of individuals over the age of 60 Khanh Hoa Province made up for 10% of the local population, above the average figure.

Therefore, the community-based care for the elderly is essential as it will contribute greatly to raising the population quality, fulfilling the national strategy on population and reproductive health, period 2011-2020.

The two wards of Phuoc Long and Phuoc Hai have been chosen to pilot the program since July 2012. Much propaganda will be held to raise public awareness of the role of elderly adults in communities and responsibilities of families and communities towards elderly adults in the two wards.

Many social activities and services will be organized such as contests, talks, musical shows and so on, giving elderly adults the opportunity to interact with other people to amuse themselves.

Huynh Thi Hien, Vice Director of Khanh Hoa Provincial Department of Population & Family Planning says the program will help the elderly to realize their health status, so that they can take better care of their health as well as improve nursing home care for the elderly.

The program aims to promote the role of the elderly in communities, helping them to lead a healthy and active life.

Hopefully, the program will become a health care network for the elderly, facilitating their access to long-term counseling and care.
