Regardless of hardness, more than 300 students of colleges and universities in Khanh Hoa Province have volunteered to mountainous and remote areas during the summer to do social activities. Every place where they came, meaningful works have been done and many people have been given help.

. Making new roads, colorwashing old houses

Visiting Son Tan Commune, Cam Lam District, 40 kilometers away from Nha Trang a blazing hot day, we witnessed volunteer students of Pacific Ocean University working wholeheartedly to build roads to the medical center and nursery school of the commune.

About 40 volunteers worked in groups. Some undertook to executing the work, some collected stones and carried them to the work and some fetch firewood and vegetable to prepare meals for the whole team. All were sweaty but they looked enthusiastic.

“Every summer volunteer campaign, we try to do a welfare work which is practical and long lasting to the people’s life. This year, with the support of Post and Telecommunication Joint Stock Insurance Corporation, we will make entrance to Son Tan Medical Center and Son Tan Nursery School. The work is worth over VND10 million”, said Nguyen Thai Hoang, secretary of Pacific Ocean University’s Youth Union.

Son Tan is a poor mountainous commune where 95% of the population are minority ethnic people. Its medical center has been built since 2007 but it has no front yard and the entrance is very difficult to travel. Patients have to go by a roundabout route to enter it. The nursery school is in the same situation.

“Making road to enter the medical center and nursery school is a very meaningful action the volunteer team of Pacific Ocean University have done for the commune’s residents”, said Deputy Chief of Son Tan Medical Center Nguyen Thi Hong Huong.

Ngo Thi Ngoan, a volunteer student, shared, ‘Because of the little fund, we decided to collect stones and sand to have more materials for the work. We desire to contribute to make this rural area better.”

In addition, volunteer students of Pacific Ocean University have colorwashed 10 houses of needy families and gave 10 presents worth VND1.5 million to revolutionary families in Son Tan.

. Dredging canals

In Khanh Hiep Commune, Khanh Vinh District, volunteer students of Nha Trang Teachers’ College also have done many meaningful activities,

From the early morning, after a simple breakfast, 50 volunteers traveled 5 kilometers by tractor and one more kilometer by foot to get Ba Cang Hamlet to dredge a canal. The weather here is hot but it often rains, bringing gravelly soil from riverhead down and blocking canals. Therefore, it’s very necessary to clear them for clean water.

The young people were utterly dedicated to their work. They seemed to awake quiet fields here. After plain lunch with porridge and some fish, the young people lied under trees’ shadow for a short nap and then they continued working.

. Decorating school

Visiting volunteer team of Nha Trang National College Pedagogy in Dien Tan Commune, Dien Khanh District on their third day of the campaign, we were very surprised at the change of the commune’s nursery school which has been embellished by colorfully painted walls and newly built parterres.

“Our main duties this time are building 15 parterres, painting walls, decorating classes and clearing bushes here. We will also do some other works in the commune”, said Thai Van Tai, secretary of the college’s Youth Union.

Chau Thi Viet A, principal of Dien Tan Nursery School, happily told us, “Our school, established in 2009, had no finance to decorate. Luckily, now, the volunteers have helped us. In this new school year, our little pupils are sure to be very happy when seeing the school more beautiful.”

. Cleaning environment, propagandizing environment protection

In Ninh Tay Commune, Ninh Hoa District, students of Nha Trang University have contributed their strength to help the remote area. They have cleaned roads and markets and repaired roads to Song Bung Hamlet, Song Bung School and Ninh Tay Primary School. Moreover, they propagandized the residents about awareness of environment protection and mobilized the residents to join the commune’s study encouragement association.

Tuyet Lan, a student, smilingly said while carrying water with a shoulder pole, “I want the volunteer campaign to last longer in order that we can do more things for the residents here.”

Vice chairman of Ninh Tay Commune confirmed, “Our commune are thankful to volunteer students who have contributed to make the commune brighter.”
