. Overcoming deprivation

A late ferry carried me from Da Bac Fishing Port of Cam Ranh City to Binh Ba Island in Cam Binh Commune, Cam Ranh at a hot midday. Lieutenant Pham Chinh Bac, head of Binh Ba Antiaircraft Observatory and four soldiers, picked me up and guided me to their garrison which is at height 244 with steep rocky ascent.

Right from early morning, the soldiers had gone down the mountain to buy food and two tanks of fresh water and then they took them to their garrison. The far and bumpy road made all of us tired and sweaty. Going over forests and mountains for several hours, we reached their garrison, which is an  old 40 sq.m. house with yellowed paint. Promptly, the soldiers started cooking the late lunch.

Every day, the soldiers have to walk along the mountain slope to residential areas to buy food and water. Each trip, they can carry only 30 liters of water for daily activities. Therefore, water saving is important here. The soldiers use only 1 liter of water to clean teeth and face in the morning. Even, they bathe every 3 days.

At night, they gathered by a small radio to listen to news. This is the media for them to know about surrounding life. Recently, they had a television but the bad weather have made the machine downgraded quickly. They also put it on from 7 pm to 8 pm to watch news.

Overcoming deprivations, the soldiers still stay and do their duty.

. For the peace of the Central’s airspace

Binh Ba Antiaircraft Observatory has only one squad. The leader Pham Chinh Bac has worked here since 2007. While he left family for the squad, his wife bore a daughter alone. The first time he met her daughter when she was 2. He has not celebrated lunar New Year at home for six years. Every time when hearing the little daughter on phone, he misses her very much.

The other soldiers are still single. Pfc. Toan, from Cam Ranh, confided, “Firstly, I was very homesick, but I got familiar to the life here and I love my work.”

On height 244, soldiers watch the country’s sky with concentration. Faith is seen on their faces. Owning them, the Central’s sky is watched days and nights.
