The program “For children’s hearts” of Khanh Hoa Children’s Fund has helped hundreds of poor children with congenital heart diseases and their families in Khanh Hoa Province.

The “For children’s hearts” program is dedicated to helping improve the lives of children with congenital heart defects.

Nguyen Kim Phung in Ngoc Hiep Ward, Nha Trang City, used to be affected by her heart condition everyday and get breathless and tired. She were hospitalized many times.

Her mother, Ngo Kim Thanh, said, “The provincial children’s program has given us financial support to help her to undergo a surgery which we could not afford.

Thanks to the VND100 million support, she had a surgery in Ho Chi Minh City in July 2011. She is fine now. We are very happy and grateful.”

Vo Thi Kim Ngan, 13, in Phu Nong Village, Vinh Ngoc, Nha Trang, underwent a heart surgery in early 2012. His father named Vo Thanh Chung said, “The cost of my daughter’s heart valve repair surgery is VND150 million, but we are poor. The children’s fund has helped her to have a life-saving treatment and operation. We are very grateful.”

The two cases mentioned above are among hundreds of infants who have recived financial support by the “For children’s heart” program for heart surgeries.

Tran Thi Thanh Mai, Director of Khanh Hoa Chiddren’s Fund, Deputy Director of the Department of Labor, Invalids & Social Affairs, says 152 out of 19,000 kids are born with heart diseases.

However, half of the infant patients benefited from surgery because most of their families cannot afford the hospital cost plus travel and accommodation expenses in Ho Chi Minh City for heart operation.

The Khanh Hoa Children’s fund in association with the Department of Labor, Invalids & Social Affairs founded the program “For children’s hearts” in 2007, raising fund from charity organizations for poor children.

Since then, heart operations have been performed on 500 children with the total cost of VND over VND12 billion. Nearly VND5.3 billion has been raised, including VND4.1 billion from Vina Capital and Ho Chi Minh City Poor Patients’ Association, VND570 million from provincial Budget and VND630 million from many other organizations and individuals.

Reportedly, Khanh Hoa Provincial Children’s Fund has recently signed an agreement with Khanh Hoa General Hospital and Cho Ray Hospital to give medical treatment to and perform heart surgery on 100 infants with inborn heart problems in Khanh Hoa Province.

Accordingly, 20 infants with inborn heart problems are expected to undergo surgery free of charge at Khanh Hoa General Hospital.
