Over the past years, local senior citizens have been given great concern and care from the local authorities through social welfare policies. The elderly's living standard has much improved.

The Bureau of Labor, Invalids & Social Affairs in association with the Association for the Elderly of communes, wards and towns has provided many assistance programs and services available to help senior citizens, who need extra support.

92 year-old Tran Thi May, Phuoc Long Ward, Nha Trang City says, “I have to be dependent on my children and grandchildren in everyday activities. A monthly grant offered to me is really helpful.”

Tran Thi Thanh Mai, Deputy Director of the Department of Labor, Invalids & Social Affairs, says most of the local communities have assured social service welfare for old people, helping them to achieve and maintain their independence and improve their quality of life.

Besides the grants, senior citizens have been given medical insurance cards and funeral financial assistance.

Phan Long, 83, Vinh Hoa Ward, Nha Trang City, says, "With my medical insurance card issued free of charge, I can receive medical treatment for free or at a reduced cost."

The elderly have benefited a lot from the medical insurance as they often suffer from old age diseases, including cardiovascular disease, arthritis, cataract, osteoporosis, etc. Health care includes free medical examination and medicines given to local senor citizens.

According to Le Xuan Hanh, Chief of the Representative Board of the Association for the Elderly, there are 856 sport clubs where the elderly can meet and share interests.

Senior social welfare in Khanh Hoa Province has helped promote the elderly to stay active, both mentally and physically, and continue to make valuable contributions to their communities.
