Social work is a professional and academic discipline that seeks to improve the quality of life and wellbeing of an individual, group, or community.

The rapid economic growth has brought the poverty rate down to 20% in 2005 from 60-70% in 1992.

However, the gap between the poorest and the richest has become larger. Most of the poor live in rural areas and do not have access to modern comfort.

Social work has its roots in the social and economic upheaval, in particular the struggle of society to deal with poverty and its resultant problems. Dealing with poverty was the main focus of early social work.

Social staff work with domestic violence victims, mostly children and women, and protect them safely.

Professional social workers play an important role in helping vulnerable children to overcome difficulties and integrate into the community.

In addition, social workers also deal with the consequences arising from many other social problems such as sex abuse, human trafficking, etc.

Besides, social workers also contribute a lot to the national health programs, especially HIV-AIDS control programs. Medical and public health social workers help people who are old, sick or who have health problems by giving advice and nursing care.

The Decision No. 32/2010/QD-TTg of the Government on development of social work, period 2010- 2020, issued in 2010 by the Prime Minister offers comprehensive planning framework for development of social work in Vietnam.
