Over the past years, the Khanh Hoa Trade Union of Economic & Industrial Zones has contributed greatly to the local production and business development.

The trade union has bargained with employers on behalf of union members and negotiated labor contracts with employers, helping to maintain or improve the employment conditions.

Out of 30 local businesses which have trade unions, 28 have signed collective trade contracts with workers. The remaining 2 businesses are drafting collective trade contracts to be signed in early 2013.

Over 30% of the signed contracts offer workers more profits and rights than required. Typical examples include San Miguel Beer, Long Shin, Long Hiep, Fujiura, Phillips Seafood, etc.

Elisito A.Locay Locay, General Director of Miguel Vietnam Company says, “Our leadership board understands that the trade union plays an important role in assuring our success. We try our best to improve workers’ living standard and working conditions. Gifts and financial support have been given to poor and sick staff.

Khanh Hoa Trade Union of Economic & Industrial Zones has raised over VND112 million for the housing fund, given relief, including rice and gifts, to blood victims and poor employees, etc.

However, some employees at economic and industrial zones in Khanh Hoa have still suffered from financial problems. WIth an average income ranging from VND2.8 million to 3 million/ month, some 20% employees have paid VND200,000-300,000/ month for the house rent.

Nguyen Hoa, Chairman of Khanh Hoa Trade Union says, to cope with the economic crisis, many employers have cut jobs leading to unemployment. Besides, some have owed social insurance, medical insurance and unemployment insurance.

Therefore, the trade union of economic and industrial zones should take more actions to protect legal rights of employees as well as share employers’ existing problems.
