A New year gift basket containing 5-12 items such as wine, tea, sweets, cakes, coffee, etc costs VND150,000-VND2 million. Besides ready-packaged gifts, customers can also create custom gift baskets with special treats.
Due to the climb in production and transport cost, the price of each gift basket increases by 5 - 10% compared with last year.
Nga, an owner of a grocery store on 2-4 St., Nha Trang City says Vietnamese products sell well due to cheap prices.
Locally-made products have much improved in quality with reasonable prices.
Domestic wine brands such as Da Lat, Vodka Hanoi, Nep Vang and Lua Moi wine range between VND40,000 and VND60,000/ bottle while the imported ones are much more expensive, between some hundred thousand dongs and some million dongs.
Kinh Đo or Bibica cakes cost VND55,000 – VND85,000/ box while French or Japanese products are priced at VND180,000 – VND250,000/ box.
Nguyen Vu Ngoc Thien, the director of Citimart Nha Trang says some employers choose to give their staff necessaries, including cooking oil, sugar, seasonings, washing powder, etc. instead of gift baskets as usual.
In addition, many staff prefer being offered cash gifts for the Tet holiday. Therefore, there is a drop-off in spending on new year gifts for staff and business partners.
The sales slump as shoppers tend to pull back on spending to save on their household expenses.
Nguyen Van Phuc, a sales clerk at Huong Lan Grocery store on Le Hong Phong St., Nha Trang, says, “We used to have a large number of gift package orders last year, but only 2 orders of 150 gift baskets have been received so far this year.
Gift baskets priced at VND200,000-500,000 sell better than more expensive high quality ones.”
