Since the beginning of the year, all communities in Khanh Son District have been assigned to take measures to prevent forest fire, says Dinh Ngoc Binh, Deputy Chairman of Khanh Son District People’s Committee.

In recent years, no big forest flame has been reported in Khanh Son. Since the beginning of the dry season, a close cooperation in wildfire control has been maintained among local authorities, ensuring a 24-hour standby to timely discover and prevent unattended grass burning and illegal forest destruction.

Fire threat to pine trees in Khanh Son District.

Khanh Son has had over 27,000 ha of forest and land under forestry planning, accounting for over 80% of the district's natural area.

This dry season, 3,400 ha of forest, mainly of pine and acacia trees, are at high risk of fire.

However, some farmers carelessly use slash-and-burn, an agricultural technique which involves cutting and burning of forests or woodlands to create fields. The fire may get out of control and spread to nearby forests. Most of the high-risk forests are located in hilly areas, far from water sources.

Khanh Son District People’s Committee has directed local relevant agencies to take measures to protect the forests from burning.

Firefighting equipment is available to reduce the likelihood of fire and make sure people can safely escape if there is a fire.

In addition, propaganda campaigns have been launched to raise public awareness of forest protection and fire prevention.

Fire control measures have been implemented in high-risk forests and mountain fields together with the construction of wildfire control system, including fire-breaks, signals, etc.
