Commander Nguyen Manh Hung says, “We have only 8 oxen, which are kept to a limited number to assure ecological balance and environmental protection."
Pigs, ducks and chicken are well raised, meeting the food needs for residents and soldiers on Southwest Cay.
Perhaps the great impression of Southwest Cay is that it is similar to Vietnamese countryside with lush trees, mostly barringtonia asiatica and heliotropium foertherianum together with vegetable gardens and vast green grass.
Perennial trees play an important part in ecological environmental protection while green grass is forage for poultry and cattle.
Grass-fed beef and pork are considered as unique healthy food that can be found here.

Together with relatively high rainfall, the soil and weather here are also suitable for vegetable cultivation. Vegetables develop well on the island, meeting the local demand.
The life on the island is peaceful and relaxing. That is the great effort of both local residents and soldiers living and working on Southwest Cay.
