Susanne Schupfer, a Swiss woman, President of “Susanne’s Help for Children” Association, has done charity work in Nha Trang City for nearly 20 years. She has helped many poor children to overcome difficulties and continue their schooling.
“How is your study, 1176? Try your best in study, 1779. You are in the eighth grade, aren’t you, 945?” Susanne Schupfer asked poor children during her visit to their homes in Nha Trang City.
“I can’t remember their Vietnamese names, because they are too difficult for me to pronounce. I call them by their identification numbers. Children are given support for 9 years until they reach the ninth grade. I come back to Vietnam to visit them twice a year.
At present, 1,880 needy children are in the care of “Susanne’s Help for Children” Association. I can remember every child I help because each has his or her own circumstance.."

Tran Thi Kim Lien, Nguyen Binh Khiem St., Nha Trang City, ID No. 945 says, “Susanne Schupfer has given support to me and my younger sister. Apart from VND2 million grant each twice a year, we receive school things and toys. Last year, my father had an accident and suffered from bone fracture. She gave us VND26 million for his hospital fee. We are so grateful and she is really our second mother.”
Nguyen Thi Xuan Mai, ID No.1779, Group 4, Binh Tan has also benefited from “Susanne’s Help for Children” Association. “Our daughter, Mai, has received support from the “Susanne’s Help for Children” Association for 1 year. Her support is so meaningful" , her parents named Nguyen Van Doan and Phan Thi Tam happily say.
Besides school tuition grant, Susanne Schupfer has provided VND95 million for house construction and other household appliances.
This year, Susanne Schupfer has become a “second mother” of 38 children, bringing the number of children in her care to 1,922.
Charity work in Nha Trang came to her mind when she traveled here in 1994. Sitting on the beach, she met poor child street-vendors. Since then, back to Switzerland, she has sought for donation to help those needy children and then the “Susanne’s help for children” Association was founded.
Besides scholarships worth VND2 million/ student twice year, “Susanne’s Help for children” Association and Susanne Schupfer have offered gifts, rice, bicycles and provided financial assistance for house construction, medical care for poor families. The total cost of the charity has reached tens of billions dongs.
She says, Nha Trang City has developed quickly, especially in tourism. However, poor, illiterate people cannot benefit much from the development. Wise investment is in education. Therefore, I give the poor opportunities to have access to education, which results in raising income, improving health, promoting gender equality, mitigating climate change, and reducing poverty. The impact of investment in education is profound.
"Susanne’s Help for Children” Association and Susanne Schupfer do charity work in Nha Trang twice a year, in summer and winter.
The association has provided long-term support for 1.884 children and offered gifts, financial support to 4,500 needy students so far.
The 20th anniversary celebration of its charity work in Nha Trang City (1994 - 2014) has been approved by Khanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee. On this occasion, the association and Susanne Schupfer will be honored, commended and rewarded for her great contribution to the development of Nha Trang City in particular and Khanh Hoa in general, Nguyen Khac Ha, Deputy Chairman of Nha Trang City People’s Committee says.
