Khanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee issued Decision No. 1400/QD-UBND on June 17, 2009 approving the project on integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) on Nha Trang Bay in an attempt to achieve sustainability.
Covering approximately 500km2 with 19 islands and islets, Nha Trang Bay boasts biodiversity with fantastic realm of 350 species of coral reef, 222 of fish, 120 of mollusks, 70 of crustaceans, 248 of seaweed, 7 of sea-grass and so on.

With the support of Hon Mun Marine Protected Area (MPA) Project, Nha Trang Bay Reserve was founded in 2001 to help Khanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee to implement activities related to the preservation, exploitation and promotion of the value of Nha Trang Bay Reserve.
Some important results have been gained due to practical biodiversity protection activities, the promotion of community involvement in protection of Hon Mun core zone and Nha Trang Bay, environmental protection propaganda, marine species data collection, local livelihood support, etc.
Nha Trang City has been chosen to implement the ICZM, because Nha Trang is Khanh Hoa Province’s center of tourism, economics, culture and science in a national strategic defense location, contributing 50% of the national GDP.
The Prime Minister signed Decision No. 158/2007/GD-TTg on 9 October 2007 approving the ICZM Program for the northern central region and central coastal provinces. Khanh Hoa Provincial People’s Committee has issued Decision No. 1400/QD-UBND approving the project on ICZM on Nha Trang Bay. These are important bases for authorities and departments to implement the ICZM effectively.
The project is designed to enhance sustainable management and exploitation of Nha Trang coastal zone resources, carry out technological and scientific activities, build up sustainable financial mechanism for the preservation and management Nha Trang Bay resources, bring propaganda to change environmental behaviors and activities of people and organizations concerned during the project period, build a geographic information system (GIS) for ICZM, etc.
Khanh Hoa has invested VND500 million on the implementing of two contents, including an environmental propaganda plan in an effort to change environmental behaviors and activities of people and organizations concerned and build a GIS for ICZM.
According to the Department of Natural Resources & Environment, the province has paid great attention to this matter and arrange the funding for the project from now to 2015. In the time to come, many activities related to ICZM will be done for effective implementation of the project.
