Since the beginning of the year, 26 classes have opened for over 900 fishermen, costing more than VND1.3 billion.

Le Van Tien, Ha Ra Area, Vinh Phuoc Ward, Nha Trang City with 25-year experience says, “The course provides useful knowledge, including safety awareness & team building for the entire crew at a critical stage. It also gives crewmembers the opportunity to develop their own safety management system specific to the individual skills of those onboard. Besides, it teaches us about the Maritime Law and the Law of the Sea. Therefore, thanks to the course, we work more efficiently now. After expenses are deducted, I can earn between VND15 million and VND20 million from each fishing trip."

Tran Ngoc Hung, Ninh Hai Ward, Ninh Hoa Town, who has 20 years’ fishing experience says, “We used to call mechanics from the mainland for help when we had some problems with the engine. Now, our crew knows some simple basic things to do in case an engine breakdowns. Therefore, we feel safer during our fishing trips.”

Le Tan Ban, Deputy Director of Khanh Hoa Department of Agriculture & Rural Development says, “The knowledge from the courses have helped fishermen to be more confident, work more efficiently and avoid risks when at sea.”

The training courses have focused on fishing techniques, including operation, maintenance and repair of fishing gear; navigation, vessel maintenance and other related matters, operation and care of radio and radar installations which the trainees may be called upon to use, etc.

Mai Xuan Tri, Deputy Director of Khanh Hoa Department of Labor, Invalids & Social Affairs says, “Over the past 3 years, the program has brought satisfactory results. However, the training demand in Khanh Hoa Province is still high. Therefore, in the time to come, the department in association with the local authorities will extend the program to all fishermen in the province.”
