This December is National action month on population 2013. Khanh Hoa Newspaper has had an interview with Huynh Thi Hien, Temporary Director of Khanh Hoa Provincial Department of Population & Family Planning. She says the theme of the National action month on population 2013 is "Aging population - Challenges in looking after the elderly.”

The number of old age people makes up 10% of the local population. Khanh Hoa population is aging.
What challenges will face the society with aging population?
The greatest challenge is how to take good care of the elderly. In spite of longevity increase, many suffer from diseases, 95% with non-communicable chronic diseases.
Data from the population survey in 2011 on the elderly shows that the number of elderly people is growing faster than any other population groups so the aging index also increases rapidly, while the potential support ratio decreases significantly. Out of 9 million old people, 4,8% are healthy, 67,2% weak and 95% sick. 26,1% do not have any medical insurance cards.
The number of old people living alone has increased year by year. The number of people living with families is decreasing, making up 72,3% of the local population from 80% in 1993.
What activities are held in Khanh Hoa in response to the National Action Month on Population?
May activities are underway in Khanh Hoa such as propaganda on aging population, population quality increase, especially elderly medical care; conferences and workshops on the current situation, challenges, measures dealing with aging population, reproductive heath care services, family planning, population quality increase, particularly on islands, in remote areas, giving priority to old people; inspection and supervision on the implementation of policies on population and family planning, especially those on elder care.
