MA. Nguyen Xuan Hoa (Institute of Oceanography) and his colleagues have implemented the subject “Caulerpa lentillifera cultivation and processing technical transfer for residents and soldiers in Truong Sa District”, helping to meet the local increasing vegetable demand.
Caulerpa lentillifera is high in minerals, vitamins and several essential unsaturated fatty acids and thus it has a high economic value. Caulerpa lentillifera is grown in many countries, including Vietnam.

Since 2004, the Department of Marine Botany (Institute of Oceanography) has conducted the first researches on Caulerpa lentillifera biological characteristics and cultivation in labs. Studies have shown that Caulerpa lentillifera can develop all year round in cement or composite basins, ponds and coastal areas with stable high salinity.
In fact, the subject “Caulerpa lentillifera cultivation and processing technical transfer for residents and soldiers in Truong Sa District” has been jointly implemented by the Institute of Oceanography in association with Truong Sa District People’s Committee and Naval Region 4 .
After one year of trial cultivation, Caulerpa lentillifera has developed well with a high productivity, 4kg/m2 in a rainy season and over 4kg/m2 in a dry one, over 10kg of fresh Caulerpa lentillifera/m2…
According to MA. Nguyen Xuan Hoa, who has joined a mission trip to some islands in Truong Sa District, Caulerpa lentillifera cultivation is suitable for actual island conditions.
Based on the analysis of natural conditions in relationship with biological characteristics of Caulerpa lentillifera and surveys on sinking and floating islands of the Spratly Islands in May 2013, a suggestion has been given on construction of 6 basins with a capacity of about 3m2 each on the islands.
Accordingly, the researchers have suggested the provincial People’s Committee should continue giving support on Caulerpa lentillifera cultivation on islands in Truong Sa District to increase vegetable supply to local residents and soldiers.
Besides, Nguyen Viet Thuan, Chairman of Truong Sa District People’s District, has asked the researchers to further cooperate with the local authority to study thoroughly factual conditions of the islands to make sure their subject assures environmental and regulatory compliance.
