Khanh Hoa is among 24 provinces with a stable birth rate. In 2013, the average number of children per reproductive-aged woman is 1.93; the sex ratio at birth is 109 boys to 100 girls; rate of couples using modern contraceptive methods is 77.3%, an increase of 0.9% compared with the year 2012; 96,703 couples use new contraceptive methods, up 18% compared with the plan.

The maternal death rate is reduced to 13/100,000 alive babies, the death rate of babies under 1 down to 6.4 ‰ and malnutrition rate among children under five down to 10.5%. The figures have shown satisfactory results of Khanh Hoa population.
Khanh Hoa Provincial Branch for Population & Family Planning has successfully implemented population quality improvement models, the project on population management in marine and costal areas, etc.
However, Khanh Hoa population is facing many challenges such as women aged between 15 and 49 accounting for 33.1%; higher demand for family planning services; high unbalanced sex ratio in Van Ninh (122%) and Ninh Hoa Town (113.3%); high birth rate in the two mountainous districts of Khanh Son and Khanh Vinh; 22% of couples with more than 2 children; the elderly accounting for 10% of the population, etc. These have posed difficulties for local population tasks.
At the ceremony marking the Vietnamese Population Day 2013 themed “Aging population - Challenges in looking after the elderly”, Phan Trong Dung, Chief of Communications – Education Office, Provincial Branch for Population & Family Planning says the target in 2014 is to reduce the birth rate by 0.2‰ and the rate of couples with more than 2 children by 0.25‰. To reach the target, more propaganda is required together with improvement of population and family planning services in remote areas and implementation of population quality increase models.
According to Huynh Thi Hien, Temporary Director of Khanh Hoa Provincial Department of Population & Family Planning, behavior change propaganda and contraceptive device marketing are required together with reproductive health and family planning service socialization. Besides, it is necessary to encourage a specific population quality increase model for every community, apply methods to control the sex ratio at birth, build suitable polices to persuade couples having 2 children of the same gender not to give more births, etc.
